summer fun [catching up] | Nashville Franklin Child Family Outdoor Studio Photography

Is Summer flying by for you?  I cannot believe we have just 2.5 weeks until school starts.  What a fun Summer we have been having.  I hope that your Summer has included fun, travel and family time!

Lots of great folks have stopped by to hang out with me this Summer.  Here’s a quick sampling of some of the sessions I’ve been working on recently in between pool and travel time!

Grandma Nancy and her sweet granddaughter, Samantha:  Samantha is a cancer survivor and has had other health obstacles to overcome.  While visiting her Grandma this Summer, they asked for a studio session to capture them together.  I was honored to do so!

These sweet boys were also visiting Grandma this Summer and we met up one morning for some fun near the studio.  They were spunky and well behaved, a great combination!

I have had 4 newborns in the last month, and I’m sure I’ll be sharing more from their sessions soon, but here’s a little sneak from each of those yummy sessions!

And last, but certainly not least, I captured a family that has recently gone from 5 to 7, in all of their beauty, with love outpouring.

I’m catching up on all orders and galleries now after a wonderful, relaxing week at the beach.  And squeezing out the last possible bits of Summer fun with the family before I send both of my boys to school full time for the first time ever.  SNIFF!!!

I’ll leave with a personal favorite from the trip last week as my parting shot.  More beach images to come very soon.  Happy Summer!

audrey is 2! [sneak peek] | Brentwood Nashville Family Outdoor Summer Mini Session

When you hire a photographer, you often have a vision of what you want your images to look like.  Maybe not the exact location, or even how your kids will smile or sit, but usually you have spent time looking through other friends’ photos, photographers’ websites or Pinterest for ideas of what is current.  Or you might be working toward matching an existing look in your home, be it colors that coordinate with the family room where the big family picture will hang or pairing the newest toddler’s portrait on a wall with older siblings at the same age.  Some folks want edgy images, some want more candid style and others prefer a traditional look.  It’s my job to figure all of that out BEFORE we ever get to the location and start our session.  Because in the end, I want you to have images that you love and that work for you and your family in your home.

When Jenny contacted me recently, she knew her goals for her session.  The last time we were together she had 2 adorable kids and we created an adorable family image that hangs in their home.  Now, they have a spunky 2 year old daughter as well (time flies!) and mom is pregnant with #4!  The goal of our session was to create an updated family image and to capture the 3 kids together.  Jenny even texted me images of what we captured last session that are hanging on the walls so I knew what to aim for! And, of course we needed some adorable images of Miss Audrey, too!  Jenny likes a more traditional look to her images, so I suggested the open grassy area at the private, Brentwood outdoor location where I shoot.  Happy customer?  Happy photographer!

beyond the ordinary [urban session location] | Nashville Franklin Family Outdoor Urban Downtown Photography

Tennessee is known for its rolling green hills, lush trees and horse farms.  We are blessed to be able to hold outdoor sessions through many months of the year, providing a variety of seasonal backdrops.  Outdoor portrait photography is very popular here and most clients that contact me ask about outdoor location options.  I love a good open green landscape, but sometimes the background, when printing, provides an abundance of green.  Or maybe you’ve had outdoor portraits taken a few times in a nature setting and are looking for something different.  May I suggest an urban session.

Downtown Nashville has an abundance of texture and the tall buildings allow us to be more flexible with session times.  Harsh sunlight by 10a and through 6p can really limit Summer outdoor sessions, but the shade of the buildings allow a much wider time frame for us for scheduling.

the triplets are one! [sneak peek] | Nashville Outdoor Family Triplets Toddler Photography

If you’ve been a frequent visitor to this blog, you’ve undoubtedly seen what I call “the khp triplets”.   I have enjoyed the challenge and fun that photographing triplets has brought, from their beautiful newborn session, their adorable holiday session all the way to standing, crawling toddlers.  We recently got together at their grandparents’ home in South Franklin and had a fun time chasing babies and capturing these gorgeous babies!

I’m excited to share a few images from our morning together.  You’ll even see Savannah, my awesome assistant, working double duty as a baby wrangler and photography lighting assistant at the same time!  I sure am going to miss her when she’s off to college in the Fall.

I could spend every day with these sweet 3!  Thanks A & C for allowing me the opportunity to capture your three babies again!

Considering having a session with your baby who is not yet walking?  Don’t wait until they are tearing down the hallway on two feet…get that session scheduled as soon as possible.  A standing, wobbly toddler is much easier to photograph than a new walker who has much to explore!

hudson is one! [baby planner] | Nashville Baby First Year Child Toddler Photography

happy birthday, hudson!

webBP Todd S3 1 YR 052214-027

Hudson is the first of several little ones that are completing their first year of life documented here at karenhalbert photography.  i am continually honored to be a part of the most important year to document for each of my khp babies!  We all cherish baby pictures, and look at them again and again as we grow up.  We tease our siblings’ dates with baby pictures, share them of our graduate to show how far they’ve come and pull them out again when we have our own children to show similarities in features and baby cuteness when we are parents ourselves.  And for my baby planner folks, I get to be a part of that history.  THAT is so cool.

Hudson has been quite the model client.  He’s been happy and sweet at each session.  Look how much he has grown in a year!!!

Hudson and his brother stopped by to tell their wishes to Santa in November.  All baby planners get a free itty bitty Santa session, along with other perks throughout the year.

And recently he came back to the studio for his final baby planner session!  He was toddling around and babbling, and was as fast as can be!  We had to get creative and move quickly to keep him in front of the camera.  He looks so big here!

newborn goodness [baby planner] | nashville newborn studio baby’s first year photography

I love my baby plan babies!  Seeing them go from itty bitty babies to walking, talking toddlers never gets old.  Each one is unique and adorable and an adventure.  When Meghan emailed to let me know she was pregnant with baby #3 and wanted to enroll him/her into my baby plan, I was extra excited.  She makes some adorable kids!  I knew this one would be a cutie, too!  Sweet Hanley came to the studio 8 days after he was born.  He was the perfect little baby model and his brothers did a fantastic job as well!

When incorporating a newborn session into the baby plan, most families opt for a total of 4 sessions in the first year.  The baby planner newborn session is a bit shorter of a session and focuses on baby and family.  A shorter session (around an hour) with a full gallery and a print or digital package.  For those wanting first year images, it can be a great solution when a stand alone newborn session and baby plan isn’t desired.

So, you’ll be seeing Hanley as he hits all his major milestones this year:  pushing up, sitting and then standing.  It’s going to be a great year!  And mom and dad will have some gorgeous images of their teeny little man as he turns into a bumbling, babbling little boy over the next 12 months! They will also get special priority reservations to special events like my popular Santa sessions in the Fall as current khp baby planner members.

Know someone having a baby?  A baby planner session makes a great gift as well!

updating your look [professional headshot] | Nashville Brentwood Professional Headshot Head Shot Studio Outdoor Photographer

This month is National Headshot Month.  Ok, so I made that up, but by the end of the month I will have shot nearly 30 headshots for a variety of professional needs.  Yoga instructors, Real Estate brokers, an author, attorney, guest speakers and models.  The needs vary from client to client, from relaxed, casual, fun images, to professional but approachable natural light based or studio light based images.  I’ve been outdoor and indoor this month and am grateful to have the studio and surrounding area to handle a variety of requests.  Individuals, small businesses and large businesses alike.  You can come to the studio or I can arrange to do the headshots at your office.

What makes a great headshot?  Complimentary clothing (colors great for your skin tone, smooth lines and something of interest like a tie, scarf or necklace, in fabrics that are not likely to wrinkle,) a fresh haircut (not too fresh, for best results get a trim 7-10 days before your session,) and for the gentlemen a close shave and for the ladies, a professional application of makeup (getting your hair styled is great, too!)   You might think it isn’t necessary to get your makeup and hair professionally done, but I will tell you that it looks better on camera and you’ll feel more confident and attractive after a professional hair and makeup session!  You can have your hair & makeup artist meet us at the studio or arrive already styled.  I can even provide names of hair & makeup artists if you don’t already know of one.  Yes, it is an additional expense that you could skip but the look that exudes from you when you are feeling and looking your best is priceless.  And chances are you’ll be using this image in some marketing capacity, whether to promote yourself, your business or your book/product.  Don’t you want people to see your best you?

Along with looking your best, I coach you to be as relaxed and comfortable as possible and provide flattering posing instruction.  Once the images are taken, I use some light Photoshop editing to subtly enhance your best features and downplay the ‘tricky’ spots.  We all have them!

The final product is a gallery of images that allows you to select your favorite, though I can’t promise the choice will be easy!  My current headshot package provides for 3 digital files with your session, so you don’t have to choose just one!

Mary Cady arrived on location having professional makeup applied sporting a great Spring look.  She’ll be speaking at a few events in the upcoming weeks and wanted a new head shot to give to the promoters.  She chose a location that was near to her heart and we were able to capture exactly what she was looking for in a matter of minutes!

Her gallery provided her with these images:
